Witkoff Arrives in St. Petersburg for Ukraine Peace Discussions

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff arrived in St. Petersburg on Wednesday as diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine continued, according to reports.

Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), welcomed Witkoff at Pulkovo Airport. The two subsequently departed the airport in a motorcade.

Witkoff is expected to hold discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and present an updated proposal aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine, according to media reports.

His arrival follows negotiations held in Oslo on Tuesday, where Witkoff participated in discussions on a potential settlement alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store and Finnish President Alexander Stubb.

Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and an envoy involved in the diplomatic initiative, also participated in the discussions remotely.

Following the Oslo talks, Stubb indicated that the participants had made progress on several aspects of a possible agreement. He said proposals addressing security guarantees and economic arrangements had been developed and were expected to be presented by Witkoff to Russian officials.

The discussions form part of ongoing efforts to identify terms that could pave the way for a negotiated resolution to the war. Security arrangements for Ukraine and the economic framework of a potential settlement remain among the issues under consideration.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio characterized the Oslo meeting as successful, while noting that its outcome had not included any unexpected developments. Witkoff's subsequent visit to Russia is expected to provide an opportunity to convey the proposals discussed in Norway directly to the Russian leadership.
