Iraqi PM Welcomes Shia Group’s Move to Place Arms Under State Control
In a statement, Zaidi described the move as a “national position” that strengthens state institutions and reinforces the principle that arms should remain exclusively under state control.
He said the decision would help “reinforcing security and stability,” support the rule of law, and contribute to building stronger state institutions capable of meeting public needs, according to reports.
The prime minister also praised Iraq’s political and religious leadership for supporting national unity and maintaining stability in the country.
Asaib Ahl al-Haq, one of Iraq’s most influential Shia political and armed groups, announced earlier that it would form a committee to begin separating from the Popular Mobilization Forces and transferring its weapons under state control.
The group was founded in 2006 after splitting from the Mahdi Army linked to cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. It has played a significant role in Iraq’s armed and political landscape.
According to reports, it is the second major faction to move toward formal integration into state structures, following Muqtada al-Sadr’s earlier decision to dissolve his “Peace Brigades” and bring them under state authority.
