Tunisian Court Sentences Ennahda Leader to Life Imprisonment
The ruling was issued by a criminal chamber handling terrorism-related cases at the Tunis Court of First Instance, which also handed down a range of prison sentences to other defendants in the same case, according to Tunisia’s state media.
Ghannouchi, who has been in detention since April 2023, received a life sentence plus an additional 30 years, while his former deputy Ali Larayedh was sentenced to 42 years in prison.
Other defendants, including former security officials, received sentences ranging from 10 years to life imprisonment, with some receiving additional extended penalties. The court also imposed post-sentence administrative supervision measures for several individuals.
According to reports, the case involves 35 defendants and stems from an investigation launched in 2022 following complaints connected to the killings of prominent political figures Chokri Belaid and Mohamed Brahmi in 2013.
Authorities accused the defendants of forming and participating in a “terrorist” organization and other offenses under Tunisia’s counterterrorism laws.
The Ennahda movement has denied the allegations and previously stated that the proceedings against its leadership are politically motivated.
