China Condemns US Claims About Chancay Port in Peru
Speaking on Thursday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian condemned what he described as a “blatant spreading of rumors and smearing of Chancay Port,” and voiced firm opposition and dissatisfaction with the US position, according to official statements.
The exchange follows comments made by the US State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, which raised concerns that Peru could lack effective control over Chancay—one of the country’s largest seaports. The bureau alleged that the facility is under the authority of what it characterized as predatory Chinese ownership.
"We support Peru’s sovereign right to oversee critical infrastructure in its own territory. Let this be a cautionary tale for the region and the world: cheap Chinese money costs sovereignty," said the State Department's Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs on US social media company X on Wednesday.
Located in the coastal city of Chancay, the $1.3 billion port complex was officially opened in 2024 by Chinese President Xi Jinping during a visit to Peru. The project has been described as a major infrastructure development aimed at strengthening trade links between China and Latin America.
