ICE Detains Refugees in Minnesota

(MENAFN) US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained dozens of previously vetted refugees in Minnesota in recent days, relocating many of them to detention centers in Texas, according to The New York Times on Tuesday.

The arrests, which largely involved Somali refugees, including minors, came after a Trump administration announcement last Friday that thousands of refugee cases would be reexamined through new background checks.

The review targeted refugees who had entered the United States but had not yet secured permanent residency (green cards).

However, the statement by US Citizenship and Immigration Services did not indicate that refugees would be detained or transferred to immigration facilities.

Michele Garnett McKenzie, executive director of the Advocates for Human Rights in Minneapolis, said the number of detainees had reached at least 100, with most being moved to detention centers in Texas.

The refugees had entered the US legally through the Refugee Program, undergoing rigorous overseas screening and meeting strict persecution criteria.

Although they are required to apply for green cards within a year, delays often occur due to financial costs and bureaucratic hurdles. Until now, they had not faced arrest or deportation threats.

In November, Trump shifted his focus to refugees in Minnesota, a Democratic-leaning state that hosts the nation’s largest Somali community, after reports alleged that some had improperly claimed millions of dollars in funding for social services that were never provided.
