Spanish PM’s socialist party suffers severe defeat in elections
The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) won only 18 of the 65 seats in the regional assembly, a sharp decline from the 28 seats it secured in the 2023 election. This marks PSOE’s worst performance in Extremadura to date.
The conservative Popular Party (PP), which took control of Extremadura in July 2023 through a coalition supported by Vox, remained the largest party in the assembly with 29 seats. Maria Guardiola of the PP currently serves as regional president, ending decades of Socialist governance in the region.
Although the PP aimed to secure an outright majority in Sunday’s vote, it fell short and will once again need Vox’s backing—whose representation rose from five to 11 seats—to pass legislation.
Regional governments in Spain hold substantial authority over key areas including health care, education, infrastructure, and cultural policy. Observers viewed the Extremadura election as an indicator of PSOE’s broader prospects, particularly as it leads a minority coalition at the national level.
