High-Ranking Russian General Dies in Moscow Car Blast

(MENAFN) A prominent Russian military commander lost his life in a vehicle detonation in Moscow on Monday, according to the nation’s Investigative Committee.

In a declaration shared on Telegram, the committee confirmed that Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, who headed the Operational Training Department of the Russian General Staff, succumbed to wounds sustained in the explosion.

“According to investigators, on the morning of Dec. 22, an explosive device planted under the bottom of a car was detonated on Yasenevaya Street in Moscow,” the statement said.

Authorities noted that inquiries are currently in progress after the initiation of a criminal case in the capital.

“Investigators are pursuing various theories regarding the murder. One of them is that the crime was orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services,” it added.

Officials in Ukraine have not yet issued a response to this allegation.

Back in April, another high-ranking officer, Lt. Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik, perished in a vehicle explosion in the Moscow region. Russian officials attributed that incident to Ukraine’s Security Service, though Kyiv neither confirmed nor rejected responsibility.

In December of the previous year, Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, commander of Russia’s Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection Defense Forces, also died in a blast in Moscow.

Several Ukrainian news organizations, citing insider sources, reported that Kirillov’s death was the outcome of a "special operation" conducted by Ukraine’s Security Service.
