UN Chief Warns of Intensifying Global Refugee Catastrophe

(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres cautioned on Monday that the worldwide refugee situation has deteriorated since the last Global Refugee Forum. He cited rising conflicts, increasing displacement, stricter border regulations, and substantial reductions in humanitarian funding as contributing factors.

The second Global Refugee Forum Progress Review, co-hosted by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the Swiss government, has commenced in Geneva.

In a video address to the gathering, Guterres emphasized the urgent need for enhanced assistance to nations that host refugees. He pointed out that nearly three-quarters of displaced individuals are currently residing in low- and middle-income countries.

Highlighting the importance of integrating refugees into local economies and promoting their self-sufficiency, he remarked: “We must boost refugee inclusion and self-reliance a dignified way to unlock human potential. Lift up local economies and lower dependency on aid.”

Guterres further underscored the significance of broadening so-called third-country solutions, such as family reunification and resettlement, acknowledging that for some displaced persons, “there simply are no local solutions.”

He noted recent positive developments, including the return of one million Syrians to their homeland over the past year, commending the efforts of international partners engaged in refugee protection.

Finally, the UN chief honored High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, expressing gratitude for his dedication to safeguarding refugees amid what Guterres described as some of the largest humanitarian crises in contemporary history.
