UN Chief warns of worsening global refugee crisis
The second Global Refugee Forum Progress Review, hosted by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the Swiss government, is currently taking place in Geneva. In a video message to the meeting, Guterres emphasized the need for increased assistance to countries hosting refugees, noting that low- and middle-income nations shelter nearly three-quarters of the world’s displaced population.
Calling for greater integration of refugees into local economies and promoting self-reliance, he said: “We must boost refugee inclusion and self-reliance a dignified way to unlock human potential. Lift up local economies and lower dependency on aid.”
Guterres also stressed the importance of expanding “third-country solutions,” such as family reunification and resettlement, acknowledging that for some refugees “there simply are no local solutions.” He cited recent progress, including the return of around one million Syrians over the past year, and commended international partners for their role in protecting refugees.
The UN chief also expressed gratitude to High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, recognizing his leadership during what Guterres described as “some of the largest humanitarian crises in modern history.” He urged continued global collaboration “to invest in refugees and those communities and to defend and uphold the right to seek asylum and protection, a fundamental pillar of international law.”
