Russia Warns of Reciprocal Actions if US Restarts Nuclear Testing
Peskov was responding to remarks from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who noted that Washington’s renewed testing directive “includes delivery systems,” after President Donald Trump instructed the Pentagon on October 29 to restart nuclear testing “immediately.”
Rubio, however, did not clearly verify whether full-scale experiments were actually being considered.
“If we consider this as confirmation that the US is withdrawing from the test ban, then this confirms these intentions,” Peskov asserted, emphasizing that such testing would violate a long-standing period of a comprehensive moratorium. “As our president said, in this case, Russia will act accordingly.”
According to Peskov, President Vladimir Putin’s directive on November 5 was not intended to initiate preparations for an actual test but rather to collect data and “examine the advisability” of such actions in response to US initiatives.
In a separate discussion with a news agency, Shoygu explained that Russian institutions and Security Council specialists had already begun “modeling possible responses to both existing challenges and their potential evolution,” insisting that Moscow cannot “sit idly by” while the arms-control structure deteriorates.
He added that the White House has yet to issue “a comprehensive explanation” concerning recent American comments about nuclear testing and stressed that Russia anticipates Washington will continue to honor its obligations under long-established test-ban agreements.
