UK to build first small modular nuclear reactors in Wales
According to a government statement, Wylfa on Anglesey has been selected as the site for the country’s inaugural small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear power station. The project represents an investment of over £2.5 billion ($3.2 billion) and is expected to provide a major industrial boost to the region, creating around 3,000 new jobs in the local economy.
The reactors will be developed by the publicly-owned Great British Energy-Nuclear and, pending final contracts, designed by Britain’s Rolls-Royce SMR. These mini nuclear reactors are smaller and faster to build than traditional nuclear power stations and are expected to generate electricity sufficient for approximately 3 million homes, supporting the government’s clean energy agenda.
The announcement follows a major agreement with US regulators to streamline construction approvals for new nuclear power stations in both countries, alongside commercial initiatives such as X-Energy and Centrica’s plans to build up to 12 advanced modular reactors in Hartlepool.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the government is leveraging all available measures—from cutting red tape and adjusting planning laws to supporting growth—to deliver the UK’s first SMR in North Wales.
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband described the project as a milestone, stating, “This landmark investment proves Britain can still build big projects that stand the test of time.”
