Ex-South Korean president rejects claims of probe interference
Yoon made the statement during approximately seven hours of questioning by special counsel investigators, cooperating and answering most of their inquiries. He was transported in a prison van to the office of Special Counsel Lee Myeong-hyeon, who is leading the probe.
Prosecutors allege that Yoon abused his authority by instructing the presidential office and Defense Ministry to overturn the initial findings of a Marine Corps investigation, allegedly to protect senior officials, including the Marine commander at the time. He is also accused of helping former Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup avoid accountability by appointing him ambassador to Australia in March 2024.
This was Yoon’s first appearance before Lee’s team and only his second time responding to a special counsel summons. The former president is under multiple investigations, including alleged attempts to impose martial law and corruption cases involving his wife, Kim Keon Hee.
The probe centers on Marine Lance Corp. Chae Su-geun, who drowned in July 2023 while searching for flood victims in Yecheon County after being swept away by strong currents.
Military investigators found that Lim Seong-geun, then commander of the Marine Corps 1st Division, and seven other officers were responsible and recommended police referrals on charges of negligent homicide and related offenses.
