Le Pen names Bardella as RN’s likely 2027 presidential candidate
Speaking to French radio, Le Pen called Bardella’s potential candidacy “obvious,” describing it as “a very difficult decision but one that is necessary in the interest of the country.”
Le Pen, who is challenging her conviction, reaffirmed her intent to “defend my rights and my innocence to the very end,” adding that she would appeal to the Court of Cassation if the Paris Court of Appeal upholds the ruling. “The plan is very clear and all eventualities are covered,” she said. “If I’m prevented from running but the Court of Cassation rules in my favor three or four months later, it will be too late to run a proper presidential campaign.”
The RN leader praised Bardella, 29, for his leadership and performance in recent European elections, saying, “I think Jordan has the qualities to hold any position that requires willpower, conviction and an unbridled love for the country.”
Addressing criticism over Bardella’s age, Le Pen noted that “the history of France is made up of people who, very young, managed to change its course.”
Le Pen’s retrial before the Paris Court of Appeal is scheduled for Jan. 13 to Feb. 12, 2026. In the original verdict, she received a four-year sentence, including two years under house arrest with an electronic tag, a €100,000 fine (about $115,800), and a five-year ban from holding public office.
Prosecutors allege that between 2004 and 2016, Le Pen used European Parliament funds to pay National Front employees, totaling about €4 million ($4.6 million). If the conviction stands, she will be barred from contesting the 2027 presidential election, making Bardella the likely RN candidate.
