Police detains, teases suspect of UK train incident
(MENAFN) Newly released footage shows the suspect in a mass stabbing aboard a train near Cambridge in East England on Saturday repeatedly demanding that police “kill” him before being tasered and taken into custody, according to reports.
British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed that the 32-year-old black British man is now the only suspect in the attack. A 35-year-old London resident who was initially detained at the scene has been released after inquiries confirmed he was not involved.
Five of the stabbing victims have since been discharged from the hospital, while one remains in life-threatening condition. Earlier reports had indicated at least ten people were injured.
According to the BTP, the suspect boarded the train at Peterborough, where he resides, just minutes before carrying out the assault. Authorities recovered a knife at the scene but have not released further details about his identity.
A video circulating on social media appears to show armed officers tasing and detaining the suspect. The taxi driver who recorded the footage later told media outlets that the man repeatedly shouted “kill me” to police immediately before being tasered.
The BTP confirmed that the victim in critical condition is the LNER train driver, Andrew Johnson, who “tried to stop the attacker” and whose “actions were nothing short of heroic and undoubtedly saved many people’s lives.”
While Counter Terrorism Policing was initially involved in the investigation, the BTP stated that “at this stage there is nothing to suggest this is a terrorist incident.”
