EU Ramps Up Funding to Bolster Finland’s Eastern Border
(MENAFN) The European Union is intensifying its financial and operational backing to bolster security along Finland’s eastern frontier, with ambitious plans to deploy a “drone wall” to enhance border defenses, EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner announced during his visit to Finland on Monday.
Brunner emphasized that the European Commission has already allocated 80 million euros (approximately 94.09 million U.S. dollars) in targeted support to Finland over the last two years. Complementing this, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) is rolling out a 150-million-euro equipment initiative—90 percent funded by the EU—focusing primarily on advanced drone technology.
A statement from the Finnish government highlighted that under the EU’s upcoming multiannual financial framework beginning in 2028, the Commission has proposed a 1.6-billion-euro budget for Finland’s home affairs sector. This figure represents an increase of nearly one billion euros compared to the current funding cycle. Priority investments will focus on strengthening drone and counter-drone capabilities to secure the border.
Following discussions with Finnish Interior Minister Mari Rantanen, Brunner revealed that the EU is developing the Eastern Flank Watch, a project designed to enhance real-time monitoring of member states adjacent to Russia. Central to this initiative is the planned “drone wall,” expected to be operational within two years.
