Zelensky Restructures Military Leadership
This decision follows significant battlefield losses and a deeply troubled recruitment campaign, which has seen frequent avoidance of conscription and confrontations between recruiters and potential soldiers.
On Friday, Zelensky appointed Brigadier General Gennady Shapovalov as the new leader of Ukraine’s land forces, taking over from Mikhail Drapaty.
The shuffle also involved the redeployment of various other high-ranking officers.
The Ukrainian military headquarters stated that Shapovalov’s mission would now involve “increasing the combat capability of the army, improve the mobilization system and training of military personnel, and implement innovative approaches to management according to NATO standards.”
These objectives point to a focus on strengthening battle-readiness, reforming enlistment procedures, and modernizing command practices.
Before assuming this new post, Shapovalov had led Kiev’s delegation within the NATO-led initiative responsible for coordinating defense aid to Ukraine.
