Car Blast in Delhi Leaves Eight Dead, Dozens Injured

(MENAFN) At least eight individuals lost their lives, and 15 others were seriously wounded in a blast that shook the Indian capital, New Delhi, on Monday, according to reports from state media.

”8 people (were) reported killed in a car blast near the Red Fort. Rescue operations underway,” a news agency reported, referencing the historic Mughal monument.

The police stated that the explosion occurred at approximately 6.52 pm (0122GMT).

Following the incident, 15 critically injured people were rushed to Lok Nayak Jaya Prakash Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly evaluated the situation during a phone conversation with Home Minister Amit Shah.

The Delhi Fire Department told the news agency that several nearby vehicles also caught fire and suffered damage in the aftermath of the blast.

“The dog squad, forensic team, and Delhi Police are present at the spot as investigations are underway,” the report noted.

Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha informed reporters that the explosion originated from a slow-moving vehicle that had halted at a red traffic light.

Residents in the vicinity described hearing a "loud noise” when the blast occurred, adding to the shock and panic in the area.

Following the explosion, authorities issued a high alert throughout Delhi to ensure public safety and prevent further incidents.
